Truckee sits just north of the Tahoe Basin, from the historic downtown to Tahoe Donner, Glenshire and the neighborhoods around Donner Lake. It’s some of the snowiest residential territory in California.

Local factors in Truckee

  • Declared snow area. The Town of Truckee declares the entire town a snow area and a “high snow” area for roofing. Its legacy tables list 260 psf at 5,500 feet on the west side, rising with elevation; from January 1, 2026, the Town allows the ASCE 7-22 snow hazard tool, and it publishes a parcel-level ground snow load map.
  • Ice barrier rule. Truckee’s code requires an ice barrier membrane on roofs of heated buildings from the eave to 5 feet beyond the interior wall line, 30 inches along each side of valleys.
  • Outside the TRPA Basin. Truckee is not in the Lake Tahoe Basin, but the Town has its own stormwater guidance: downspouts should discharge to vegetated or infiltration areas with splash blocks, rock armor or similar to prevent erosion.
  • Building department. Town of Truckee Building & Safety.
